The seasonal launch
A buyer sends 400 new SKUs shipping for Black Friday. Marketing needs them in the campaign collection today, not after a CSV export, a column match, and an upload that may or may not go through cleanly.
MassCat lets you bulk-add products to Shopify collections by pasting a list of SKUs or barcodes, or by filtering on conditions like title, stock, price or tags. No CSV template, no column mapping, no waiting on IT.

A collection looks like a simple grouping: a name and a handful of products. On Shopify, though, collections drive your storefront navigation, your homepage merchandising, your campaign landing pages, and often the logic behind your on-site filters. Get a collection out of sync with your actual catalog, and customers browse a "Best Sellers" page with sold-out items, or land on a "Black Friday" collection that never got the new arrivals.
The problem is that the products that need adding rarely start as a tidy Shopify export. They start as a supplier's shipment list, a buyer's spreadsheet, or a marketing plan for a launch. SKUs or barcodes that need to land in the right collection before the campaign goes live. MassCat exists for exactly that handoff: paste the list you were given, pick the collection, and apply it across every matching product in one action.

A merchandising plan reshuffles products across five collections at once. Doing it one product page at a time in Shopify's admin means opening hundreds of products by hand.
Both start the same way: a list you didn't build inside Shopify, and a deadline that doesn't leave room for a CSV round-trip.
Paste a list of SKUs or barcodes directly, one per line or separated by commas, spaces or semicolons, exactly as it came from the spreadsheet. Or filter by title, type, vendor, tag, price, stock, dates or metafields, combining conditions with ALL / ANY logic.
Create a new collection, add to or remove from one or several existing collections, or replace a collection's content with your list. Add whole products, or only the variants in your list.
MassCat shows exactly what will be added, removed or left unchanged. Confirm, follow the progress, and undo from your activity history if you change your mind.
Shopify's admin lets you select products on the current results page and add them to a collection, but only from whatever's on screen, and only to one collection at a time. Once your list spans more than a page of search results, or needs to land in several collections at once, the native flow breaks down.
Shopify's official workaround is a CSV export and import: download a template, match your data to its exact column structure, upload it, and wait to find out whether the import succeeded or silently skipped rows that didn't fit the format. That workaround assumes your list already came out of Shopify. Most of the lists that actually need bulk sorting (supplier shipments, buyer plans, marketing briefs) never did.
For a batch of 300 SKUs, here's where the two approaches actually diverge.
| For 300 SKUs | The CSV way | The MassCat way |
|---|---|---|
| Format required | ✕Match Shopify's exact export columns | ✓None, paste your list as-is |
| Collections at once | ✕One collection per import | ✓Multiple collections in the same action |
| Steps | ✕Export template → fill in → upload → map fields → import | ✓Paste list → pick collection(s) → confirm |
| Bad rows | ✕Import often skips mismatches silently | ✓Unmatched entries flagged before you run it |
Add hundreds of new products to a "Holiday Sale" or "Black Friday" collection using a filter or a pasted list. No manual page-by-page work.
Place the same products into several collections at once, like "Homepage" and "New Arrivals" together, instead of repeating the action collection by collection.
Remove out-of-stock or discontinued items from "Featured" or "Best Sellers" the moment they stop shipping.
Sort new shipments into the right collections straight from a supplier's SKU list, without reformatting it into a CSV first.
Any Shopify store with a few hundred SKUs feels this eventually. These four run into it every week.
New titles arrive by the box from publishers every week. Genre, author and seasonal collections need resorting constantly, not once a quarter.
Every model ships in a handful of storage and color variants. Sorting new SKUs into the right brand or category collection by hand stops scaling past a few hundred products.
One style can multiply into a dozen SKUs across size and color. Seasonal collections turn over fast enough that manual sorting becomes a full-time job.
Shade ranges alone can push a single product line into dozens of SKUs, and "new arrivals" or "bestsellers" collections need refreshing every drop.
Install MassCat and organize your first collection from the spreadsheet you were handed, in the next five minutes.
